Frequently Asked Questions About Refrigerated Trailers

A reefer trailer is an insulated, temperature-controlled trailer equipped with a transport refrigeration unit, designed specifically to transport temperature-sensitive goods. “Reefer” is slang for “refrigerated.”

Refrigerated trailers play an essential role in the cold chain. They are typically used to transport food, pharmaceuticals, and other perishable goods that require a climate-controlled environment. A transport refrigeration unit (TRU) ensures the cargo stays at specified temperatures throughout the journey, regardless of external weather conditions.

A refrigerated trailer, also called a reefer trailer, operates using an onboard transport refrigeration unit (TRU) powered by a diesel engine or, in some cases, an electric motor when stationary. The TRU circulates cool air throughout the insulated trailer, allowing for precise temperature control for both single temperature (where the entire unit is the same set point), or multi-temperature (where insulated bulkheads separate the trailer into zones that can be set to different set point temperatures). The insulation in the trailer walls keeps external heat out, further maintaining the desired internal temperature.

Reefer units are designed to maintain product temperature at fresh, frozen, and deep frozen temperatures, making them versatile for different cargo types. Sensors, controls, and fleet telematics software allow drivers to monitor and adjust conditions as needed during transit.

Reefer trailers come in a range of sizes to accommodate different freight needs. Standard refrigerated trailers used in long-haul trucking are typically between 48 and 53 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and about 13.5 feet tall, like standard dry van trailers. Reefer trailers for distribution purposes can come in smaller sizes, as small as 28 feet, also known as a pup trailer.

Trailer size depends on factors such as the volume of goods to be transported and the required temperature zones. Larger reefer trailers are generally used for long-distance hauls.

Reefer trailers can maintain a wide range of temperatures for various types of cargo. Most transport refrigeration units can keep their cargo area as cold as -20°F (-29°C), which is sufficient for transporting frozen goods. They also can be set to maintain chilled temperatures or even be heated, if needed, to prevent products from getting too cold.

The flexibility of the trailer refrigeration unit allows for safe transport of products requiring temperatures anywhere from deep freeze, up to 80°F (26.7°C). Drivers adjust the refrigeration settings according to the requirements of their specific cargo.

Yes, typical transport refrigeration units also used for cooling can be set up to 80°F (26.7°C). For heat only applications, like beverage distribution, Thermo King’s Heat King units are capable of delivering up to 50,000 BTUs, providing dependable freeze protection for goods that require stable temperatures above freezing.
