Belgium (July 13, 2009) - Considered an expert in fruit transport, COSIARMA S.p.A. (previously known as CALA Container Shipping) draws on years of knowledge and support from parent company GF Group to effectively charter seasonal shipping activities and oversee refrigerated cargo commercial movement. The company, located in Genova, was born in late 2007 when the GF Group sold Costa Container Lines S.p.A. to Hamburg Süd, but chose to retain the refrigerated vessel fleet management portion of the business.
Today, COSIARMA manages 1,800 reefers, 2 container vessels of 2,700 TEU (both chartered), and 4 large reefer vessels (double side loaders) with 10,000 pallet capacity, plus 560 TEU on-deck. The majority of the reefers (1,200) and the 4 reefer vessels are used exclusively for the GF Group's Orsero banana/fruit service from Colombia/Costa Rica to Vado. The balance of the company's reefers are used in the Philippine-Far East/Arab Gulf trade where COSIARMA is operating container logistics for commercial cargo onboard the vessels of well-known Italian fruit importers and exporters.
"COSIARMA's fruit terminal in Vado Ligure is very much known in the fruit business and is also used by well-known fruit companies including Del Monte®, Agrexco and Zespri," explained Kay Henze, sales director, Thermo King Global Marine Solutions. "In fact, many of the companies co-load product onto COSIARMA's vessels. Similarly, the company operates a fruit terminal in Fruport Tarragona and will soon build a new terminal in Séte, France."
Due to wide acceptance and popularity of Thermo King's MAGNUM® reefer among customers and leasing companies, COSIARMA chose to add 450 of them to its fleet of units in 2008 by both leasing and direct purchasing. "The energy saving performance, ease of use and reliability were all reasons we requested the MAGNUM reefer," explained Manlio Ginocchio, director of logistics. "The fast and powerful pull-down of the reefer is extremely helpful with the banana cargos, which are usually loaded hot."
The MAGNUM reefer has been proven to pull down temperatures faster, saving in overall power consumption. This translates into less fuel burned and less carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere - a savings to shippers' bottom lines and to the environment.
"COSIARMA is a true expert in fruit transport, understanding fully that it takes quality containers and reefers to protect the cargo," said Henze. "That various other fruit importers and exporters work closely with COSIARMA in sea transport to Europe is perhaps the best testament to the company's knowledge base."
