Davis Express: Growing with the Future in Mind

(Minneapolis - March 19, 2009) - It's been nearly 40 years since James Davis bought his first truck and became an owner-operator. Through the years, he and his son, Jimmy, have earned the business and the respect of countless supermarket chains, fresh meat producers, fresh produce growers and more. Today, family-owned Davis Express of Starke, Fla. operates 225 trucks and 375 refrigerated trailers and is proud to run 220 Thermo King TriPac™ Hybrid Auxiliary Idle Reduction and Temperature Management Systems (APUs) to help protect the environment.

Already into their third generation of family members - James has since retired, while Jimmy is now president and CEO, Jimmy's wife Dorene serves as treasurer, and their three children are in key management positions (Joshua is vice president, Kayla is director of Safety and H&R, and Joel is CFO) - Davis Express has been built with future generations in mind.

"We had just a few trucks when I graduated from High School," explained Jimmy. "We've adapted with the times so that we could grow and succeed, and we were always proud to be a family business. As my family joined the team, company success is even more invaluable, but so is leaving the world a better place. We utilize the Thermo King TriPac system to reduce tractor idling and fuel consumption, which decreases the emissions that are released into the environment. This is important to us and our customers."

To further show customers and community that they are committed to protecting the environment, Davis Express joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. SmartWay Partners save fuel, money, and the environment. "We are part of the SmartWay program because we support fuel conservation and clean air," said Jimmy. "And we continue to search for ways to improve our fuel efficiency and make our environment healthier."

The TriPac System is one way they are doing this. Davis Express drivers love the units not only for the environmental benefits, but because they are quiet, convenient and easy to use. "The power inverter is a driver favorite," said Jimmy. The company has been running Thermo King's APUs since 2006.

Efficiency is also gained through the Davis Express fleet of Kenworth tractors and Utility 3000R refrigerated trailers, the majority of which have Thermo King SB-310 and SB-310+ reefers. These high capacity and easy-to-operate reefers feature the Smart Reefer® SR-2 controller with diagnostics that understand and respond to problems. "The controls on these reefers are extremely driver-friendly," said Jimmy, "making operation a snap."

Operational ease is also achieved due to Davis Express' use of OptiSet™ Plus with FreshSet™, a new feature on the SB-310+ units that optimizes cargo protection and quality, as well as reduces driver decision-making on load parameters. Together with the SR-2 controller, Opti-Set Plus helps reduce errors and increase fuel efficiencies. To take advantage of this updated technology throughout its fleet, the company has been flash-loading the new software into existing SB-310 reefers.

Davis Express relies on Thermo King of North Florida for its product needs, as well as service support. "Our very first refrigeration unit was a Thermo King NWD 30 unit, and we've always had Thermo King reefers in our fleet. We've chosen them exclusively since 2005, and our local dealership is the big reason," explained Jimmy. "From quick turn-around on repairs, to always having the parts we need, Thermo King of North Florida has helped us stay running," said Jimmy.

A proactive maintenance program and facility is another key to Davis Express' success, utilizing Thermo King SVC's Thermo Gard™ Gold program on its Thermo King equipment to help minimize expense of unscheduled major repairs. The company has also taken advantage of a wide array of other Thermo King products and services that will help its equipment perform better and more cost-effectively.

"Davis Express has been very influential in shaping the trucking industry and is highly respected in the Southeast Region," said Bobby Frampton, Thermo King of North Florida sales manager. "They have earned exclusive contracts because they take care of their customers. It's a pleasure working and partnering with them as they continue to grow."
