Thermo King Celebrates 50 Years of Electric Standby with its SmartPower Option

(Minneapolis - March 27, 2008) - Thermo King offers its SmartPower electric standby as an option on several trailer and truck refrigeration units, including the multi temp SPECTRUMTM SB and single temp SB-210 trailer units and the MD, TS, RD and multi temp SPECTRUM TS truck units.

The SmartPower feature allows the units to operate on electric power in addition to being powered by the standard diesel engine. Thermo King has offered electric standby technology for over 50 years and continues to be the innovation leader in environmentally-friendly technologies. During SmartPower operation, power to the unit is supplied by an electric motor connected to a high voltage power source. The environmental and cost-saving benefits of SmartPower include:

    *  Increased efficiency - operation is up to 4 times more efficient than diesel operation
    *  Reduced diesel emissions
    *  Reduced noise
    *  Reduced maintenance costs
    *  Reduced waste generation
    *  Reduced life cycle cost
    *  Extended reefer lifespan

The unit controls and instruments for electric standby operation are the same as those used for diesel engine operation. The unit will automatically switch to electric operation when a power cord is connected and the standby power is switched on. If the electric power supply is interrupted, the unit will switch back to diesel power.

"North American customer interest has been very high in the SmartPower electric standby option due to all of the new environmental legislation across the country," says Jerry Duppler, trailer product manager, Thermo King. "This product is another way that Thermo King and Ingersoll Rand are continuing their commitment to a full portfolio of solutions."
